Congratulations to our Swim Safe Winners 2014!

30 schools in and around Barnsley and Bassetlaw took part in this year's Swim Safe campaign that highlights the dangers of water during the summer months. Children from years 1-3 were tasked with designing a poster that depicts water safety and featured the BPL Swim School mascot Derek the Dolphin.

From the hundreds of fantastic entries, a shortlist of just ten entries for each area was made with the editorial team from the Barnsley Chronicle, and Bassetlaw swimming staff, choosing the eventual winners.

The two overall winners were Elle-Ja (10) from The Forest Academy, Barnsley, and for Bassetlaw, Samantha (8) from St John's. Both children's designs have been made into posters, leaflets and badges which have been distributed to all participating schools.

Swim Ambassadors from BPL were on hand to make an appearance alongside Derek the Dolphin at school assemblies and to talk about the campaign. Simon Ferrarelli, Retford Leisure Centre Facility Manager who has corporate responsibility for swimming lessons at all BPL sites said: "Swim safety especially around the summer months is extremely important and that we can raise awareness through a great campaign that allows the winning design to be the visual for the campaign is brilliant. We have had a phenomenal response from local schools in Barnsley and Bassetlaw since we first launched the campaign three years ago, and 2014 has been the best response yet. Thanks to all the teachers and children who got involved!"
Water safety, especially in the summer months is very important. It is vital to educate children on the dangers that surround swimming pools and open water so that they can enjoy swimming safely
